About Our School


Tartu Hiie School is a school for children with special needs of hearing and speech. The comprehensive education is obtained in a longer study time (11 and 10 years respectively). The average number of pupils in a class is 6-12. Currently, there are 308 pupils from all the counties of the republic in the school. There are 60 teachers and educators in the school.

Pupils with hearing disabilities and deaf pupils whose parents want to provide their children an oral education study in the department of children with special needs of hearing. The pupils are taught oral (and written) speech on the basis of remained hearing, lip-reading and finger spelling that provides considerably better opportunities of cooperation for people with a hearing disability and their involvement in the everyday life than sign language. The study process is performed audio-visually, a lot of sample material is used. The pupils are equipped with hearing aids, there are collective sound amplifiers in classrooms. Through intensive hearing training, the pupils are taught to use their remained hearing actively, and together with lip-reading and development of vocabulary, perceive oral speech. Systematic teaching of oral expression skills in classes of mother tongue and speech development and outside classes as well, is connected to the life and activities of the children and aimed at making children with hearing disabilities to cope with communicating with listeners. Good oral skills extend the future possibilities of the child to choose a profession and get a job.

Pupils with normal hearing and primarily undamaged intellect who have reading and writing difficulties, under-speech and severe pronunciation disabilities that hinder them studying in a normal school, study in the department of children with special speech needs. Semantic (related to meaning) side of speech of a pupil is corrected and in connection with that, means of expressing oneself by language (vocabulary, word combinations, sentence structures) are adjusted as well. Attention is paid to practical and theoretical grammar, vocabulary is activated and expanded, a pupil is taught to read and pronounce in the right way, and writing skills are developed to the best level possible.

The school has a permanent Internet connection, e-mail service for teachers and active students, and a www-server with the school"s homepage. There is a local network in the computer class, but the computers have been obtained through humanitarian aid and due to their out-of-date configuration they are incompatible with our subject software and do not meet the standards of the modern information society.
